Dinner Music: The weekly lineup
Cosmic sounds of Cape Verde, otherworldly English indie rock, disco jazz
This week is about playful discovery. Not just discovering new songs, but discovering new things within songs. Sounds like surprise you. Lyrics that strike you. Our first album, Space Echo, epitomizes this. In 1968, a ship carrying Korgs, Moogs and Hammond organs mysteriously ended up on the shore of Cape Verde (an island off the west coast of Africa). Gossip, panic and excitement abound. All of the instruments were distributed amongst the island’s schools (some of the only places with electricity at the time) and thus the “cosmic sound of Cape Verde” was born. The music that follows is upbeat (playful!), dreamy and a little bit magical. Take Electrelane, an all-female, English indie rock band from the early-to-mid 2000. Perhaps the Guardian put it best: “…its otherworldliness, the fact that it seems to rotate on an unusual axis where songs sound slightly wrong and as though they shouldn't, and probably couldn't, work.” There’s always something keeping you listening.
Enjoy.

Pair with:
Seven-hour braised leg of lamb. Dare I say that it’s the beginning of al fresco dinner party season? Braising is the easy way to make impressive dinners. Do this with these carrots with smoked cinnamon creme.
Outdoor globe light. A fun light that you can have indoor, outdoor and make any color you want. Perfect for that dinner party. (These hanging ones are also incredible cool).
This Bode-esque shirt. My friend just wore this for his birthday and when I asked him where he got it, of course he said Abercrombie. What world are we living in? Whatever, it’s basically an $80 Bode shirt.
Thank you, thank you. -JD
