This week is about romance and mystery. The music is soft and emotive — the kind of music to play when you’re driving around at night. The sounds offer to bring us closer to our thoughts and our bodies; they occupy a space where the two become one. To put it a different way, we can just feel our damn feelings. They can be good ones, with a glass of wine and a warmth in your heart. All of the albums hit a little harder when it’s raining out — each brings in a catharsis that feels indulgent. The ideal time for these feelings is when you’re chopping vegetables. I don’t make the rules.
We’re starting in the now with Elaine Howley’s album from last year. It’s ethereal and weird. If that’s not the vibe, move onto Ofege, one of Nigeria’s most famous afro-rock groups. It’s got a bit more umphf to it. We have Frankie Reyes, a multi-instrumentalist based out of LA. His first album, the one featured here, reimagines Latin music with only a synth and a midi sequencer. It’s romantic at its peak. Catherine Howe is a folk musician from the 70s that was recently released and her album has that perfect 60s/70s sound full of psych, folk and poetry. We return to ethereal and weird with Deradoorian, though in entirely different ways than we started.
Enjoy.

Pair with:
A Table: Recipes for Cooking and Eating the French Way. My go-to cookbook for simple, impressive and delicious meals that are mostly just protein and vegetables. I just made her recipe for pork chops seared with apricot preserves. *chefs kiss*
This “Big Sur After Rain” hand soap. It just seems very fitting? I love DS&DURGA, they do some weird shit with smells. Like this pistachio perfume.
The Bicicletta. This Campari spritz from one of the only “food bloggers” that approaches cooking the same way I do (aesthetic, romantic, simple).
Have a great week.
This weekend I’ll be sending subscriber-only content that features a “after dinner dinner music” playlist. It’s a playlist of post-10pm music that is sexy and like velvet.
