I have unintentionally been interested in music made by mysterious people. SAULT is a British music collective with a shy-bend — while a few of their contributors are potentially known, the group has never interacted with the media, done a live show or released any kind of promotion or music video. No matter, the work speaks for itself.
5 was released in 2019 by SAULT as their debut album. The album walks a line between funk, neo-soul, disco, early 80s boogie and pop, but manages to not really be any of those things. The best suiting word for the album is this: groove. Not necessarily because that’s what it sounds like, but because that’s how you feel when you listen to it. The track Why Why Why Why Why puts down some fat beats, with a bit of pop-synth and creamy vocals. Not to mention that the title fits the mood of late. Think About It lends a bit more of a lo-fi, habibi funk sound, but still fits with the upbeat sounds found earlier in the album. Finally, the album ends with B.A.B.E a solidly funk, R&B track with a tinge of catharsis that sends us off to a good time.
Enjoy.
5 - SAULT
Pair this album with:
Spicy Rigatoni Vodka. This recipe is based off a similar dish at NYC’s Carbone. It’s really, really delicious, simple to make and quite impressive. Anytime I’ve made this, folks get seconds. And thirds.
Rainbow Carrots & Beets with Crispy Buckwheat and Dill Yogurt. Pretty easy and a great compliment to the pasta to round out a solid vegetarian dinner. The dill yogurt will also be a nice, acidic compliment to the heavy cream in the pasta.
Il Mostro Rosato Frizzante. A slightly sparkling, dark rosé that hails from Italy. In my opinion, bubbles compliment creamy, saucy dishes by enhancing the savory characteristics.
Thank you, thank you. Have a great weekend.
