This album is really good. Really, really good. I heard the title track Hips Shaking sometime last year and listened to it nonstop for a few weeks. Imagine: you’re in a very cool, slightly smoky, basement club drinking a negroni. You’re not checking your phone, what even is a phone? You look sexy as hell. You feel good as hell. This is the album that’s playing in the background.
Mr President is a moniker used by Bruno “Patchwork” Hovart, a producer, bassist and guitarist based in Lyon, France. He released Hips Shaking in 2014, which is a bit unbelievable given the authentic disco-era sound of every single song. The album includes a surprising Hall & Oates cover of I Can’t For That (No Can Do) that stays true to the original 80s sound while adding funk elements that take the track from wedding afterparty to Boom Boom Room chic.

Mr President - Hips Shaking
I’m pairing this album with:
Desert Plant & Pepper cocktail. This is a sotol-based cocktail with radish, lemon and a bit of agave. It’s a little bit earthy and a little bit acidic. It’s a great Thursday cocktail and pairs with a fast follow Modelo.
Hinoki Fantôme candle. This album is begging to be listened to while candles are lit. This is one of my favorite candles from my favorite candle maker, Boy Smells. Fir balsam, jasmine, smoked amber, cardamon.
Miso Carbonara. This is a great recipe for weekend cooking. Everything is pretty accessible to get except maybe the kombu and bonito flakes, depending on where you are and what your grocery store is like. Serve with a grilled romaine and broccoli tahini caesar salad.
