Laure Briard is a French singer-songwriter based in Toulouse, France. Before she became interested in creating music, she tried out a few other interests to see if they’d fulfill her creative itch. She studied literature, worked in a high school, did some acting. In 2005, when she was thirty-three, she decided to give it all up and spend her time on music. Her early sound was heavily 60s bubblegum pop with an indie tinge, but slowly Bossa Nova began to envelop her creative process. Still, she’s doing a bit of everything. How would Briard describe her sound? “Poprockpsychbossayéyé ahah!!”
Un peu plus d'amour s'il vous plaît was released in 2019 as Briard’s third, full album. Critics consider the album to be Briard’s “most sophisticated” release yet, with it’s skillful mixing of gentle ‘60s-infused pop melodies, modern psych and Bossa Nova. The album begins with Marin solitaire, a gentle pop ballad that reminds us of Briard’s musical ancestors, Francoise Hardy and Brigitte Bardot. Love Across the Sea pulls in the Astrud Gilberto-style Bossa Nova, with soft singing over a breezy, down tempo melody. The album feels like a perfect day in France might feel — sunny, simple, a bit cathartic, but completely full of life.
Enjoy.
Un peu plus d'amour s'il vous plaît - Laure Briard:
Pair this album with:
Chambéry Cassis. This sparkly crimson aperitif is perfectly Parisian. From my favorite recipe developer and food writer, Rebekah Peppler, this drink is delicious and perfect for something simple and sunny.
Seven-Hour Braised Leg of Lamb. This isn’t really a “weekday” meal, but there’s not reason you can’t braise lamb for seven hours. Most of that time is just letting it sit in the oven, and voila, you have tender lamb. Pair with this fried lemon and radish salad.
À Table. Rebekah Peppler’s cookbook, also the home of all of the above recipes. She’s so great at entertaining and explaining how to entertain, the Parisian way. Highly recommend as we go into summer dinner party season.
Thank you, have a great week. 💞
